First, this way he'd dodge it easier, since his stern would be moving away from the other ship as it's changing directions, giving him more time to turn (that's how you avoid torpedoes and shit) Second: this way he'd be on his merry way in the opposite direction before the enemy ship would manage to turn around and gain speed.
